Georgia’s quarterback room may not be very deep, the Bulldogs only have two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster entering fall camp, but it’s very possible no program in the nation has two better players at the position than the two players suiting up in Athens.

While most assume reigning SEC Freshman of the Year and SEC Champion Jake Fromm will remain the starter for the Bulldogs, Kirby Smart and his staff added arguably the nation’s best recruit in five-star quarterback Justin Fields to the roster in the offseason. That addition ensures the Bulldogs will have a competition at quarterback for the second consecutive fall camp between a rising sophomore and an elite freshman prospect.

Now that the NCAA is allowing players to appear in as many as four games and redshirt for the first time in college football history, could that alter the program’s plan for Fields and potentially redshirt Fromm’s likely backup? That doesn’t appear to be the plan, according to Smart.

Here’s what the Georgia coach had to say during his appearance at SEC Media Days in Atlanta on Tuesday when asked if Fields will redshirt next season, according to Marc Weiszer of the Athens-Banner Herald.

“I don’t see that. …That’s not in our plans,” Smart said regarding a potential redshirt for Fields.

Smart also added these comments on Fromm and Fields during his appearance at the main podium from Atlanta.

“We have two very talented guys… They have both grown and embraced their roles in the locker room and on the field,” Smart said.

When asked specifically about Fields, Smart added these thoughts.

“Justin is a kid who has tremendous ability… Really came in wanting to learn,” Smart continued. “He’s taken on the second-team role quickly. He gives us an element we didn’t have… He’s made the players around him better.”

Based on those comments, Georgia will give Fields every opportunity to get on the field early and often next fall. When you take into account how far Fromm managed to take the Bulldogs as a true freshman, it’s clear this coaching staff has no qualms with handling the reins of the offense to a first-year signal caller. If Fields earns the starting job in Athens heading into the season, as unlikely as that may seem at this time, look for Smart to give it to him.
