Kirby Smart is doing a lot these days as he prepares for the National Championship Game in his final turn as Alabama’s defensive coordinator before taking over at Georgia. He was in Jacksonville yesterday to watch the Bulldogs take on the Penn State Nittany Lions in the Taxslayer Bowl.

But that was not the only reason for his trip to Jacksonville.

According to the Athens Banner-Herald, Smart also met with Virginia Tech associate head coach and running backs coach Shane Beamer. Shane is the son of longtime Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer, who is retiring now that the season is ending.

The Banner-Herald reports Beamer could be in line to coach special teams or one of the position groups on offense.

Beamer previously served as special teams coach for South Carolina from 2007-10 and recruiting coordinator at South Carolina and Mississippi State. He also spent some time coaching defensive position groups while in Columbia.

Beamer has plenty of familiarity with the SEC and its operations.

Smart has had to be pretty efficient with his time as he prepares for the National Championship Game and College Football Playoff and assembles a staff and begins recruiting for his new job with Georgia.

He has already put together quite an impressive staff, including a few former Alabama assistants, and has already gotten out on the recruiting trail pretty hard as the Bulldogs have maintained and picked up some recruits.
