After two outstanding seasons serving as Georgia’s starting quarterback, no one can question whether Jake Fromm has what it takes to lead the Bulldogs to success on the field. However, that being said, we won’t know how well he truly fits into James Coley’s offensive system until the fall following Jim Chaney’s decision to leave Athens for Knoxville.

During his recent appearance at the Bulldog Caravan in Macon, Kirby Smart was asked about his signal caller’s adjustment to playing under a new offensive coordinator. Based on Smart’s response, playing for a new OC won’t bother Fromm, and in fact, it sounds like the Georgia coaching staff is relying on the junior quarterback more than ever while looking ahead to the 2019 season.

“I think Jake is doing a great job. Got some more quarterback guys around him, with Coley working in there with him, he’s excited about that,” Smart said in a YouTube video posted by DawgPost. “For him, it’s been a transition through the coordinator position where he is kind of a sponge. He’s got more of an opinion now, he understands what we are trying to do offensively. I think anytime you have a three-year starter, he can give you input on the type of things he likes about the offense, things he dislikes, the things he thinks can be successful. That input is helpful, it’s always helpful, but ultimately as coaches, we have to decide what to do.”

Those comments back up similar statements made by Fromm this spring when asked about playing in Coley’s offense.

“Definitely know exactly what’s going on, even more than I did last year. Things have slowed down,” Fromm said back in March.

The Georgia quarterback also noted back in the spring that he doesn’t expect the offense to look much different under its new leadership.

“A lot of similar things are going on and it’s good for both of us,” Fromm said when discussing playing for Coley. “For me, it’s great to learn some new stuff, too, keep me on my toes. I love to learn anything about football really intrigues me so I’m excited about what’s going on in that room. Can’t wait to get better in the spring.”

With spring in the rearview mirror, not only has Fromm progressed but he’s helping the Georgia coaching staff get better, too, according to Smart. That’s got to be a scary thought for SEC defenses considering the success of Georgia’s offense last season.
