At the conclusion of Wednesday’s practice, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart offered his thoughts on numerous topics pertaining to his football team.

The quarterback competition between Brice Ramsey, Greyson Lambert, and true freshman signal-caller Jacob Eason continues to be convoluted. There hasn’t been one quarterback truly sticking out up to this point, and it’s anyone’s guess as to which one will start in the season opener against North Carolina. Eason has been taking the majority of the first-team reps recently in practice.

As Smart told Dawg Nation, “We’re going until we figure it out. Hopefully it’ll work out in the next couple days. But no one’s jumped out.”

Per Online Athens, Alabama transfer DB Maurice Smith continues to work with the second team. Corner Juwan Briscoe returned to practice, and running back Elijah Holyfield continued to work on the exercise bike as a means to rehab a knee injury.

The kicking situation was addressed somewhat in the presser, and Smart did also speak about true freshman defensive lineman Julius Rochester.

The 6-foot-5, 316 pound defensive tackle was part of a stellar first class brought in by Smart. Rochester enrolled early this past January — with the thought he’d contribute right away.

However, off-the-field issues (in the form of an arrest) derailed that progress. While Rochester has suffered some adversity, it appears as if his hard work is paying off.

“Julian Rochester has done a great job. Came in the spring and was kind of out of shape. He had an amazing summer,” center Brandon Kublanow told 247sports. “He got in really good shape. I think he’s done an amazing job. He’s listened to everyone. Hoping for big things from Julian.”

Linebacker Reggie Carter echoed Kublanow’s sentiments when speaking about Rochester:

“Rochester is a player who gets better every day. He comes to work, and just gets better. I think he lost 23 pounds this offseason. That’s amazing. It helps him and it shows on the field.”

While it isn’t certain whether Rochester will indeed feature in the season opener, he’s (at the very least) put himself in a position to make an impact as a true freshman — assuming he’s called upon.
