Deangelo Gibbs wasn’t with Georgia during the spring, but Kirby Smart anticipated the sophomore defensive back would make a return.

After Gibbs was not enrolled in classes while dealing with an unspecified medical issue and dealing with a left shoulder injury, Smart provided an update during SEC Media Days in Atlanta on Tuesday.

“He’s on our team currently and working out with the team,” Smart said.

Gibbs played in six games for the Bulldogs during his freshman season in 2017, collecting three tackles. He was on the second team at cornerback before leaving the team late in the year for his undisclosed medical issue.

Georgia lost three starters in the secondary from last season, so it’s possible that Gibbs will compete for a starting role now that he has returned to the team.

Gibbs isn’t the only addition the Bulldogs have made this summer. Former Cal wide receiver Demetris Robertson announced on Saturday that he is transferring to Georgia.

Smart also commented on Robertson, who is from Savannah, Ga., and was recruited by the Bulldogs before committing to Cal in 2016.

“I’ve known Demetris for a long time,” Smart said. “He’s a kid I recruited since the ninth, 10th grade in Savannah. I had a really good relationship with him through recruiting. He went past signing date. We got to develop that relationship even further when he decided to go to Cal. Him coming back — we are excited to have him back in our program. We have a big need on our team, especially at the wideout position.”
