Cincinnati Bengals receiver A.J. Green wants to play again in 2016, he’s just not sure if he can.

But there’s one thing the former Georgia star is certain of — his hamstring injury isn’t as bad as the team initially feared.

ESPN reported Friday that Green said he started jogging this week and hopes to return this season if medically cleared, though there is no timetable for his return. He plans to be cautious with the Grade II hamstring tear he sustained against the Buffalo Bills on Nov. 20, and injury the Bengals first believed would end his season.

“It was 50 percent torn,” Green told ESPN Friday, speaking to reporters for the first time since the injury. “But it’s not bad, it’s not torn off the bone or nothing like that. No surgery needed.

“I’m going to play it safe. I want to get back, no matter what kind of season we’re having. I’m not the type of guy to pack it in. Whenever I’m ready, I’ll be ready to go, but I’m not going to rush it and have this as a continuing issue.”

Green had amassed four touchdowns and 964 yards this season before the injury. ESPN noted that if he returns this season, he can reach 1,000 receiving yards and join Randy Moss as the only NFL player to start a career with six straight 1,000-yard seasons.
