Authorities have been trying to tone down the “World’s Largest Cocktail Party” for years, and it appears that a big Georgia tradition is now in question for future Georgia-Florida weekends.

Georgia students and fans flock to St. Simons Island, Ga. prior to arriving to Jacksonville, Fla. for a raucous UGA-only party before the party. The party on the eve of the Georgia-Florida game, however, has many local residents and authorities questioning how to control the sometimes out-of-control masses that descend upon the small island.

Some residents and authorities are discussing the option of banning alcohol on the beach known as “Frat Beach” in order to stem the partying and keep the crowds under control. But, it’s not just the party at the beach that has some locals complaining.

From the Athens Banner-Herald:

“We have 15 to 20 students staying in houses around us and they may not go out to the beach, but they are still drinking and partying,” she said. “I have never seen such lewd behavior. Some of our neighbors send their children off for that weekend.

“Thousands of kids come to this island because they have heard they can come here to party. Clearly many of them are underage. You see them taking gallon jugs of alcohol-laden beverages to the beach and then come stumbling back through the neighborhoods. Some pass out along the roadway. Someone is going to get hurt or killed.”

The influx of visitors does, however, bring an economic boost to the island and some residents and authorities don’t want to shut off this influx of money that hits the island.

Members of the Brunswick-Glynn County Chamber of Commerce met recently to discuss the issues surrounding the Georgia-Florida weekend party. Most of the discussions surrounded how to prevent excessive drinking, underage drinking, drug use and other crimes that can occur with the estimated 10,000 person crowd that gathers on “Frat Beach” each Friday before heading down to Jacksonville. No official changes have been made, but discussions are said to continue prior to the 2015 football season.
