Georgia moved up five spots in Tuesday’s College Football Playoff poll after crushing Auburn, re-entering the Top 10. But that’s a small consolation for a team that just lost Todd Gurley for the season and has little chance at making the four-team national championship tournament.

The Bulldogs (8-2, 6-2) crushed the Tigers, 34-7, on Saturday to enter the clubhouse with a strong chance to win the SEC East. The committee rewarded the impressive victory by making UGA the third two-loss team behind No. 8 Ole Miss and No. 9 UCLA.

A finish inside the top eight largely depends on Missouri. If the Tigers lose to Tennessee or Arkansas, Georgia will play either No. 1 Alabama or No. 4 Mississippi State in Atlanta for the SEC championship, giving the team one more opportunity to impress the committee.

Surprise losses by teams in front of UGA also could help the team move up.

Boy, that loss to Florida sure does sting. The Bulldogs would be in a five-team battle for the fourth and final playoff spot with No. 4 Mississippi State, No. 5 TCU, No. 6 Ohio State and No. 7 Baylor if their record stood at 9-1.
