Some quick thoughts on Kentucky’s exciting 40-33 win over the Ragin’ Cajuns of Louisiana-Lafayette:

What It Means: The Wildcats certainly know how to make big plays, but they also gave up a few, allowing the Cajuns to roar back from a 23-point third quarter deficit to tie things up in the fourth quarter. They need to improve on holding big leads, or they will have a tough time keeping up in the SEC.

What I Liked: Stanley “Boom” Williams lived up to his nickname on the first play of the game, with an electrifying 75-yard touchdown run. The offense showed it could score points, and the defense made a few big plays of their own with turnovers. The Wildcats showed a lot of heart, particularly when Louisiana tied the score, by getting up off the deck and taking back the game.

What I Didn’t Like: It was a tale of two halves for the Wildcat offense, scoring 24 points in the first half but only managing three field goals until the final touchdown in the last minute of the game. The defense, while playing well in the first half, still allowed the Cajuns to mount several long drives that ate up clock and allowed them back in the game.

Who’s The Man: J.D. Harmon. He was a beast on defense, recovering a fumble inside the Kentucky 5-yard-line late in the first quarter. He then picked off a Brooks Haack pass late in the first half, followed by a 62-yard kickoff return in the third quarter.

What’s Next: The Wildcats made a good first showing under new offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson, but need to have more consistency against South Carolina next week and throughout the season if they hope to score a bowl appearance.
