Measuring by explosive plays, Kentucky is the best team in the SEC through two games.

The Wildcats have six passes of at least 30 yards and five runs of at least 20 yards. Only Florida and Alabama have given up fewer explosive plays on defense as well.

Kentucky and Alabama lead the conference in combined explosive plays through two games, with eight more than their opponents (see chart below).

Team Margin Explosive Plays Explosive Plays Allowed
T1. Kentucky +8 11 3
T1. Alabama +8 10 2
3. Arkansas +7 9 2
4. Florida +6 6 0
5. Texas A&M +5 8 3

T9. Missouri +1 6 5
T9. Ole Miss +1 6 5
12. South Carolina 0 4 4
13. Tennessee -1 2 3
14. Vanderbilt -2 2 4

Arkansas boasts the third-most offensive plays by virtue of seven rushes for 20 or more yards. The Razorbacks carved up the Nicholls State defense on Saturday, skewing the numbers in their favor.

Alabama, with Blake Sims and Jacob Coker alternating at quarterback, is tied with Kentucky for the most explosive passing plays in the SEC with six.

Despite scoring 125 points, Texas A&M’s offense is tied for fourth with eight explosive plays, five of them passes.

The most surprising reveal may be Tennessee. The Vols force-fed Utah State into the shredder on opening weekend, then controlled Arkansas State throughout. Still, UT has only produced two explosive plays, both passes, behind a completely rebuilt offensive line.
