Kentucky starting quarterback Patrick Towles suffered an apparent ankle injury on the Wildcats’ second drive of Saturday’s game against Tennessee, forcing him to leave the game in the middle of the possession. He was 4 of 5 passing for 43 yards before suffering the injury, and had run for a team-high 19 yards.

Towles removed his shoe and had his ankle looked at by the training staff on the sideline before eventually being escorted to the locker room just minutes later. He did not appear to be limping as he exited the field, but backup Reese Phillips entered the game in his place to conclude Kentucky’s second drive and lead its third drive.

The Cats punted on their second possession and Phillips threw a pick-six on UK’s third possession to give Tennessee a 14-3 lead midway through the opening quarter in Knoxville.

UPDATE: Towles returned to the game for Kentucky’s fifth possession. Phillips led Kentucky to a three-and-out on its fourth possession, and was 0 of 4 passing with an interception while filling in for Towles under center.
