New LSU coach Ed Orgeron hasn’t yet accomplished anything other than a Citrus Bowl victory over Louisville during his brief tenure as the Tigers’ head coach.

However, his home community of south Lafourche in Louisiana is excited about the hire and will honor Coach O with a special “Coach O Day” celebration on Feb. 17.

Larry Weidel, one of the event planners, told houmatoday.com that the celebration is about honoring one of the town’s own for doing great things:

“We are all very proud of Ed Orgeron, and we want to give our 100 percent support behind him,” Weidel said. “We want to give the community to have a chance to share in his success. It will be a community party.”

The planned banquet will also honor the 1977 South Lafourche high school football team that won a state title. Coach O was on that squad, as was former professional QB Bobby Hebert.

Tracking down the busy coach wasn’t easy, Weidel admitted, but he’s happy everything worked out:

“He didn’t have many free dates, I promise you,” Weidel said. “He is not his own man these days because he is very, very busy.”

Weidel added that proceeds from the event would be given to some of Coach O’s favorite nonprofit organizations.
