Coming into the spring, we thought of Maea Teuhema as a guard and Tyron Johnson as LSU’s third receiver.

Not anymore.

Spring brought some shifts on the LSU offensive depth chart, and here’s how we see it as we head to summer. We’ll look at the defensive depth chart later this week:

Quarterback

Brandon Harris (Jr.), Danny Etling (Jr.), Justin McMillan (RS-Fr.), Lindsey Scott (Fr.)

Outlook: Harris may have avoided a potential August quarterback controversy with Etling, the Purdue transfer, by having a solid spring. This doesn’t mean there aren’t still questions. Harris needs to convert that good spring to a better fall to get LSU’s anemic passing offense going. Having Etling, who was a starter at Purdue, pushing him from the No. 2 role, should help.

The future: McMillan will have to make considerable progress to hold off Scott, Louisiana’s 2015 Mr. Football, to be the heir apparent. Both will have plenty of competition from 2017 commits Lowell Narcisse and Myles Brennan.

Running back

Tailback: Leonard Fournette (Jr.), Derrius Guice (So.), Darrel Williams (Jr.), Nick Brossette (So.)

Fullback: John David Moore (Jr.), Bry’Kiethon Mouton (So.), David Ducre (So.)

Outlook: LSU’s strongest position features not only a Heisman candidate in Fournette, but a rising star in Guice, who could be a feature back in most programs. Williams counters Guice’s explosiveness with power, giving LSU a complete backfield. Fournette’s numbers struggled after Moore went down with a knee injury. Moore’s return should help the Tigers’ running game, but Mouton adds a little more skill to the position as a solid pass-catcher and running threat.

The future: LSU should continue to be loaded at a position where Louisiana continues to produce great players. All four of the current backs are from within an hour of campus, and the area includes more dominant backs. Les Miles should have no problem maintaining a run-first mentality with the talent available in state.

Wide receiver/tight end

Receiver: Malachi Dupre (Jr.), Travin Dural (Sr.), Jazz Ferguson (So.), Dee Anderson (Fr.), D.J. Chark (Jr.), Tyron Johnson (So.), Stephen Sullivan (Fr.), Drake Davis (Fr.), Russell Gage (Jr.), Derrick Dillon (RS-Fr.).

Tight end: Colin Jeter (Sr.), Foster Moreau (So.), DeSean Smith (Sr.), Jacory Washington (So.)

Outlook: Dupre and Dural are the returners and both have the talent to have big years. Beyond them, the Tigers do not have much returning production. Johnson got more playing time than the others last year, but Ferguson seemed to emerge as the third receiver in the spring. At tight end, Jeter returns as a dual-threat who can both catch and block. After the loss of the massive Dillon Gordon to injury, Moreau became the go-to, “big” blocking tight end. Smith’s lack of production has been disappointing, but he remains a talented receiving threat. So is the little-used Washington.

The future: LSU has had no lack of blue chip recruits at the the position. Anderson and Sullivan seem ready to push for immediate playing time, and Johnson and Ferguson could emerge this year as consistent contributors. LSU will need to add numbers at tight end, but Moreau and Washington should be able to give LSU a big blocker/athletic receiving threat combination in the coming years.

Offensive line

Tackle: Maea Teuhema (So.), Toby Weathersby (So.), K.J. Malone (Jr.), Chidi Okeke (RS-Fr.), George Brown, Jr. (RS-Fr.)

Guard: Will Clapp (So.), Josh Boutte (Sr.), Garrett Brumfield (So.), Adrian Magee (RS-Fr.)

Center: Ethan Pocic (Sr.), Andy Dodd (Jr.)

Outlook: There are a lot of moving parts that could change positions before it’s all over. The biggest is the move of left guard Teuhema to left tackle. If that doesn’t work out, Pocic could end up there as Dodd did a fine job at center with Pocic sitting out spring ball with an injury. Boutte and Brumfield could have a spirited competition at guard and Weathersby should be challenged by Malone.

The future: Teuhema and Weathersby could be anchoring the LSU line for a few years to come. Donavaughn Campbell and and Willie Allen are a pair of highly regarded 2016 recruits who will likely join them to form massive future offensive lines for the Tigers.
