LSU held its first scrimmage of the spring on Saturday. The Tigers went for 100 plays, with 40 from the first team offense and 40 more from the second team. It was “sloppy,” as Miles told reporters in Baton Rouge.

“It was a sloppy first scrimmage certainly,” Miles said. “I felt like the knick-knack penalties, the slow drives, linemen mistakes made it a basic first scrimmage. It was just a lot like our first scrimmages we’ve had here in the past.”

After the scrimmage, Miles spent some time answering questions from the media on a variety of topics.

Miles told the media horde that Brandon Harris and Anthony Jennings split reps with the first team offense 50-50. In typical Miles fashion, he gave an update on the leader in the race to earn the starting job without actually giving an answer.

Miles revealed that Harris threw two touchdowns and an interception, while Jennings threw for one score. He added that the offense moved a little quicker than usual.

The offensive line, which will see some shakeup in 2015, is starting to come into focus. The Tigers are losing three starters from 2014, La’el Collins, Evan Washington and Elliott Porter, and could wind up starting a new player at all five spots in 2015.

After starting last season at right tackle, Jerald Hawkins will move to the left side, while the Tigers have tried out 2014 left guard Vadal Alexander at right tackle. Andy Dodd could take over at center, which could then push Ethan Pocic to right tackle and keep Alexander at left guard.

Whoever the five up front is narrowed down to, they’ll get to block for Leonard Fournette. The bruising running back picked up right where he left off in the Music City Bowl.

Miles did say that, in new defensive coordinator Kevin Steele’s first scrimmage, the defensive line outperformed its offensive counterpart.

“I think they were better than the offensive line today. I felt like at times they were very dominant,” Miles said.

The Mad Hatter also added that he likes the way the defense has taken to its new DC.

“The defense has done a nice job of responding to Coach Steele and picking up what he and the other coaches are teaching,” Miles said. “Coach Steele does a great job of teaching and relating to the players. He’s done a nice job of working his way through each of the position groups.

“In a teaching progression, that free safety and that linebacker have to be on the same page. The adjustments that have to be made by the line backing crew, nickels or dimes, have to be called and signaled by the free safety. There is a consistent thought that when Steele runs from one position to the other that he is addressing those kinds of specifics. I think it the right thing and the players appear to be responding well to it.”

LSU is off until Tuesday, when they’ll hold their first of three practices next week.
