Sometimes coaches spend years forming a relationship with a receiver, including repeat visits to his home, multiple on-campus recruiting trips and hundreds of texts and phone conversations.

Sometimes, though, all it takes is a scholarship offer.

Three-star receiver Da’Monte Coxie fits into the latter. He committed to LSU instantly Saturday after the school extended him a scholarship offer.

The 6-foot-3, 185-pound receiver had an outstanding day Friday at LSU’s camp, according to NOLA.com.

Coxie lowered his 40-yard dash time from 4.80 to 4.65 seconds. Then he dominated 1-on-1 reps against LSU commitment Eric Monroe, the No. 2 safety of the 2016 class, and Kristian Fulton, the No. 4 cornerback of the 2016 class.

Then Coxie “put on a clinic” at Tulane’s camp on Saturday morning, according to NOLA.com.

It was enough for LSU to call and request that he return to campus in Baton Rouge. Coxie obliged, got offered a scholarship and immediately accepted.

Coxie is the third receiver in the Tigers’ 2016 class behind four-star players Dee Anderson and Stephen Sullivan. He’s also LSU’s 18th commitment of the class and a bit of a luxury.

If he continues to perform that well when he arrives on campus next year, it’s possible he could become a big-time SEC wideout.

Sometimes athletes don’t blossom until late in their high school careers. With the recruiting calendar constantly shifting back and more pressure to commit early, it’s nice to still see a player peaking during his senior year of high school that can still get offers from major programs like LSU.

Coach Les Miles and his staff is doing an excellent job recruiting this cycle, as the team’s class ranks No. 1 in the SEC and No. 2 in the country.
