LSU football players as heroes to many people for what they do on the gridiron. But on Sunday, two Tigers became heroes for something they did off the gridiron.

About a block from Tiger Stadium, quarterback Brandon Harris and wide receiver Malachi Dupre helped out a woman and her son whose car had become submerged in water.

Heavy rains had caused flooding in some parts of Baton Rouge. The woman, who was traveling, accidentally drove into a flooded section of road and her got submerged. She and her son were able to escape from the car, but without their personal belongings. When Harris and Dupre heard that the son was a diabetic and his insulin was still in the car, they dove into the water, grabbed some of the mother and son’s personal belongings (including the insulin) and pulled them out.

“I’m told that two of our guys during that monsoon that we had stepped in and helped a stranded motorist and her child,” Miles said in this story. “Basically they went into a car that had insulin in it for a diabetic son, went under water and got it. That was Brandon Harris and Malachi Dupre doing good things on their own without direction.”

On Saturday, Harris threw for 286 yards and had three touchdown passes to lead the Tigers to a 48-20 win over Western Kentucky at Tiger Stadium. Dupre caught three passes for 86 yards, including a 55-yard touchdown pass from Harris.

But their coach appeared to be even prouder of what they did on Sunday.

“In fact, I would’ve probably told them to stay out of the water,” Miles said. “But truth of the matter is that they knew better. Great that everybody’s healthy, and it was a great move. But you know what, there’s a lot of real quality people on this team. It’s a football team brought together to get an education and play championship football, but there’s a lot of stories like that go untold that are pretty special.”
