The Advocate’s Ross Dellenger, who broke the story of Les Miles’ termination Sunday, appeared on the Paul Finebaum Show Monday to provide details leading up to LSU’s official decision.

Dellenger said school officials had a meeting shortly after the Tigers’ 19-13 loss to Auburn Saturday, which led him to drive back to Baton Rogue at 6:00 a.m. in order to break the story in time.

“There was a meeting of some sort with the university leaders probably 2-3 hours after the Auburn game concluded,” Dellenger said. “I think from there they decided to talk again on Sunday afternoon. But I think going into that meeting Sunday…after watching LSU in that game against Auburn.

“Around 1:30, 2:00 Sunday, they had a meeting, the university leaders did and the university leadership includes a few board members, not exactly sure which ones but some board members, the university president and athletic director Joe Alleva. They had another meeting of some kind and I got the phone call on Sunday that they’d made the final decision.”

Dellenger said there were two main issues that led to Miles’ firing: offensive woes and fan support. He noted that the team’s lack of production and creativity, as well as its old school scheme, played a crucial role in LSU’s decision, especially after the coach promised changes at the end of the 2014 season.

Dellenger also noted that fan support in the football program began to decrease, which was also a key factor.

“Football dominates the state and helps the university financially,” he said. “LSU football supports all of the sports that LSU has. None of the other sports are really ‘self-sustained,’ maybe baseball. LSU football, the money that it generates and the revenue helps academics…the fan support was dwindling, the donor base was shrinking. Me and my wife found some records requests a few weeks ago and we were able to find a lot of donors emailed Joe Alleva after the Wisconsin game and said, ‘that’s it, I’m pulling my donation.'”
