After a closely-contested first half, LSU was able to pull away from Ole Miss for a 40-24 win in Oxford on Saturday night.

Rebels fans started pouring out of the stadium in the third quarter as the LSU rushing attack, coupled with a stout defense, took the heart out of Ole Miss.

Here are a few takeaways from LSU’s impressive win:

Derrius Guice is an absolute monster

Tell you something you didn’t already know, right? Sure, this is an easy observation, but it just has to be stated again. He’s unbelievable. Guice rushed for 276 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries Saturday night. Ole Miss had no answer for LSU’s all-star running back. Just how amazing was Guice against the Rebels? Peep the graphic below:

LSU secondary stepped up big time

Ole Miss quarterback Shea Patterson and the Rebels wide receivers have given opposing defensive backs trouble all season. Even Auburn, with one of the nation’s top defenses, allowed Patterson to throw for 346 yards. Patterson’s lowest passing total coming into Saturday night’s game was 165 yards against Alabama. But excluding that game against the Crimson Tide (which you could probably consider an outlier), he had thrown for well over 300 yards against every team on the schedule. LSU held Patterson to a season-low 116 yards through the air, picked him off three times and sacked him three times. Nasty.

Swing pass magic

The Tigers’ offense finally came together for an outstanding performance on Saturday, racking up an astounding 593 total yards. The offense had been getting incrementally better since offensive coordinator Matt Canada added a few wrinkles against Florida, but now it’s finally showing on the scoreboard. One of the latest wrinkles is a simple swing pass to Darrel Williams, which destroyed Ole Miss all night. Williams finished the game with four catches for 105 yards. He wasn’t bad as the No. 2 running back behind Guice, either, finishing with 103 rushing yards. As a team, LSU rushed for 393 yards.
