LSU is going on two weeks without a defensive coordinator, but reports of people interested in the job and coaches that LSU might be interested in continue to leak out. On Monday, two new names were reportedly added to the ring: Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart and Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Mel Tucker.

Ross Dellenger of the Advocate (Baton Rouge, La.) broke the news that LSU had reached out to the two coaches, but it was unclear what the level of interest between the parties is.

Prying Smart away from Alabama would be a major coup for the Tigers, should it happen. Smart has been Nick Saban’s defensive coordinator in Tuscaloosa since 2008 and is one of the top coordinators in the sport. He’s also one of the highest paid, one of just two defensive coordinators that earned more than former LSU coordinator John Chavis did in 2014.

For several years, Smart has been rumored as a head coaching candidate around the country and many assume the only reason he’d leave Saban’s staff. During Sugar Bowl preparation, Smart was asked about leaving Alabama and said he would only do it for the “right job.” Most assumed that would only be a major head coaching job, such as the Auburn position Smart interviewed for in 2012.

Tucker is another interesting name in the mix. He has spent much of his coaching career at the NFL level, serving as defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars and Bears over the last decade. He was at LSU as a defensive backs coach in 2000 and was Ohio State’s defensive coordinator in 2004 before making the leap to the pros.

While Tucker is still currently on the Bears staff, he is expected to be let go along with the rest of former head coach Marc Trestman’s staff after Trestman was fired after the season.
