With the latest rule changes in the NFL, you have heard players, coaches, media, and fans complaining about some of the flags thrown regarding the controversial “leading with the helmet” penalty.

After Friday’s preseason game between the Buffalo Bills and the Cleveland Browns, quite the opposite happened as a few Bills defensive players complained about a block made by current Browns and former LSU wide receiver Jarvis Landry on Bills cornerback Taron Johnson.

“Landry, he’s a good receiver, physical guy” said Buffalo linebacker Lorenzo Alexander on Sunday, “but some of those plays that he has… I just think they’re dirty.”

Here’s the play:

Per ESPN, Landry “came from the outside part of the field and lowered his shoulder into the area of Johnson’s head as the rookie cornerback pursued Carlos Hyde toward the sideline. Johnson walked off the field with athletic trainers but later returned to the game”.

“The league needs to do a better job of calling penalties on those types of plays” continued Alexander, “Obviously, defenders get called all the time on stuff that is probably less egregious than that. If we’re going to protect our football players, we need to protect everybody, not just offensive guys.

“It was dirty at the end of the day, and that’s how I feel about it.”

Alexander was not alone in his criticism. Bills safety Micah Hyde chimed in on Sunday as well. “That’s ridiculous,” Hyde said, “Because if a defensive player does that to an offensive player, he’s getting ejected. I don’t care if he lowered his shoulder or not.”

Taron Johnson did not seem as upset as his teammates about the block, criticizing himself for not being more aggressive on the play, which resulted in a 4-yard touchdown run by Browns’ running back Carlos Hyde.”I just got to be more aggressive on that play. That’s the main thing,” said Johnson, “It’s still football, at the end of the day. So stuff like that happens sometimes. I have no animosity toward him at all.”

According to Johnson, Landry approached him and apologized after the game.

This is not the first time Jarvis Landry has been in the spotlight for a dirty block against the Bills. In 2016, Bills safety Aaron Williams suffered head and neck injuries due to an illegal block by Landry when he played for the Miami Dolphins. Landry was penalized and fined $24,309 for that play, and Williams announced his retirement from football after he was placed on injured reserve in 2016 and subsequently released by the Bills.
