Mississippi State is in the midst of a dream season, with junior quarterback Dak Prescott leading the way to a 6-0 start. The Heisman frontrunner is second in the SEC in total yards and has already accounted for 23 total touchdowns.

With Prescott coming into the year with only seven starts to his name, Bulldogs fans likely assumed they’d have another year of Dak in 2015. According to the quarterback himself, that may not be the case.

In a post by Sports Illustrated‘s Pete Thamel and Thayer Evans, the possibility of Prescott leaping to the NFL after his junior season is real. Prescott, who is slated to graduate from Mississippi State in December, told the SI writers that if he’s projected to go in the first round, he would certainly leave school, and would give strong consideration to the notion if he was projected to go in the first three rounds. The risk of not making the move is too great, Prescott said.

“One of the worst things is not going, getting injured and hurting your situation. I wouldn’t risk it if I had a chance to go first round. When the time came and there’s an option, first, second or third round and I had the season I wanted to have, I’d go.”” Prescott said.

Meanwhile, coach Dan Mullen told Thamel and Evans that “you never know,” but he expects Prescott to be back next year.

In the post, an NFL scout gave his opinion on Prescott, comparing him favorably to Mullen disciple Tim Tebow, saying the Mississippi State quarterback was a better athlete and throws the ball better than Tebow did.

Prescott still has plenty to prove as a passer, but he is trending in the right way. He’s still fairly raw and could likely use more time in the college ranks to improve before jumping to the league. The college football world hasn’t been kind to returning Heisman winners the past two years, though.

If Prescott continues on his upward trajectory, it would be impossible to pass on the opportunity to cash in.
