Rookie QB Dak Prescott led the Dallas Cowboys to their 11th-straight victory on Thursday night, a nail-biting 17-15 escape over Minnesota.

Prescott had one of his worst games, but, late in the fourth quarter, he almost sealed the win for the Cowboys with a signature Dak play.

With just under three minutes left in the game, Prescott kept the ball on a broken 2nd-and-9 play and seemingly picked up the first down before sliding to a stop to avoid a hit. However, after review, it turned out he started his slide too soon and the Cowboys were forced to punt.

Prescott told the Star-Telegram he will learn from his mistake:

“I thought I had the first down when I slid,” Prescott said. “I guess I was giving myself up before the first down. I want to get the first down. I also don’t want to take the hit and to keep the clock running. You are in a tough position. I thought I made the right play. … Yeah, a learning a experience.”

Dallas coach Jason Garrett had his rookie signal caller’s back, saying he thought the play was a showcase of Prescott’s amazing talents:

“I thought he made an amazing play,” Garrett said. “Let’s start with that. I thought it was an amazing football play to do what he did. The awareness. He knew the situation. He didn’t want to throw the ball away to stop the clock. He captures the edge. Some how he has the wherewithal to stay to try to stay in bounds in this situation. Those plays happen fast.

“He did a really good job handling that whole play. He has done a good job all year long sliding at the sticks.

“Somehow, some way tonight they felt like he was short of the sticks on that particular play. I thought he made an amazing play. Unfortunately, he slid a tick too short.”

The important thing, of course, is that the Cowboys got the win to improve to 11-1. However, being the student of the game that he is, Prescott will certainly learn from his mistake and become a better quarterback.
