Mississippi State is preparing for an intriguing matchup with Louisville and 2016 Heisman winner Lamar Jackson in the TaxSlayer Bowl, but the Bulldogs will be without starting QB Nick Fitzgerald in the game.

Fitzgerald suffered a nasty injury in the Egg Bowl against Ole Miss, and freshman QB Keytaon Thompson is preparing to make his first start in the bowl game. Logan Lowery shared video of Thompson discussing the upcoming game, and the young QB said he is excited for the opportunity.

“I’m just real excited to get my first start,” said Thompson. “I’m focused, want to execute out there.”

Thompson also admitted he didn’t expect to get the opportunity to play against a Heisman winner this season, but he is ready for the opportunity to compete.

“I’m real excited, we have a great opportunity to play a really good opponent,” Thompson explained. “Just looking to go out there and compete.”

Thompson has played throughout the season, but he was mainly used in running situations. His most extensive playing time came in the Egg Bowl after Fitzgerald was injured. Thompson completed 13 of 27 passes for 195 yards, a TD, and an interception while adding 121 yards and another TD on the ground.
