The Mississippi State defense dominated its first half of football of 2014, shutting out the visiting Southern Miss Golden Eagles in a one-sided affair in Starkville.

The Bulldogs lead Southern Miss 28-0 at halftime, and the game hasn’t even been that close. MSU has 389 total yards to Southern Miss’ 123, and registered 22 first downs to Southern Miss’ seven. The Golden Eagles were just 1-of-6 on third downs and committed three turnovers in the half.

Defensive end Preston Smith batted a pass at the line of scrimmage he would intercept himself in the first quarter, while Jay Hughes pulled down an interception in the end zone at the end of the half to keep the shutout alive. MSU also forced and recovered a Southern Miss fumble in the half.

Quarterback Dak Prescott was 15-of-22 passing for 239 yards and three first half touchdowns. Tailback Josh Robinson was equally impressive, carrying the ball 11 times for 79 yards in addition to catching three passes for 49 yards. Prescott’s touchdowns went to Fred Ross, De’Runnya Wilson and Malcolm Johnson, and backup tailback Nick Griffin ran in the fourth touchdown of the half.

The MSU lead could be larger after the Bulldogs failed to score in two trips inside the Southern Miss 5-yard-line and botched a 40-yard field goal late in the first quarter. Prescott threw an interception in the end zone on one of the two failed trips deep into Golden Eagles’ territory, the Bulldogs’ only turnover of the half.
