Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen can add another honor to his list following a 2014 season filled with unprecedented success.

The Maxwell Football Club announced Monday afternoon that Mullen was its 2014 Collegiate Coach of the Year after leading Mississippi State to its first 10-win season and first Orange Bowl berth in more than 70 years.

It’s the first time a Mississippi State head coach has been recognized as a national coach of the year in the 115-year history of the program.

“It’s a tremendous honor to be recognized as the Maxwell Football Club’s Coach of the Year,” Mullen said in an SEC media release. “It’s a testament to our players and staff for everything we have accomplished this year. We are proud of the program we have built at Mississippi State. I want to thank the Maxwell Football Club and its members.”

Mullen is the 26th winner of the Maxwell Coach of the Year Award since its inception in 1989. The award is given annually to the best college football coach in the country, and is voted on by Maxwell Football Club members as well as current head coaches, sports information directors and members of the national media.

This year’s award will be presented at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala in Atlantic City, N.J., in March.

In addition to MSU’s 10-win season and Orange Bowl invite, Mullen led Mississippi State to three straight wins over top 10 teams, something no college program in America had done since 1983. He also helped the Bulldogs rise to their first No. 1 ranking in school history, and they maintained that spot for five weeks before falling to current No. 1 Alabama on Nov. 15.

No team in the history of college football has ever risen from unranked to No. 1 faster than Mississippi State did this season.

In addition to being named the Maxwell Coach of the Year, Mullen was also named the SEC’s Coach of the Year by the Associated Press and was named the American Football Coaches Association’s Region 2 Coach of the Year. As the Region 2 winner, Mullen is also one of five finalists for the AFCA’s national Coach of the Year honor.

The Bulldogs will close their 2014 season against Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl on Dec. 31.
