Dak, De’Runnya and …?

That’s the million-dollar question for the Mississippi State offense in 2015.

The Bulldogs are set with the best quarterback in the conference, Dak Prescott, returning for his senior season. They also return WR De’Runnya Wilson, who emerged as Prescott’s go-to receiver last season with a team-high 680 receiving yards and nine touchdown catches.

But with the departure of RB Josh Robinson, who ran for 1,203 yards, compiled 370 receiving yards and 12 total touchdowns in 2014, Mississippi State will be in search of a replacement for that production in the form of a third offensive playmaker.

Gone also is WR Jameon Lewis, who was a steady contributor for the program the last four seasons.

Who could step into a complementary playmaking role beside Prescott and Wilson, allowing the Bulldogs offense to take the necessary steps forward to compete for a SEC West title this season?

Here are a few candidates:

WR Fred Ross (Jr.)
If we’re trying to predict a breakout star, this could be the top choice. Ross has all the tools to be a standout receiver this season, and has shown big-play ability in his 24 game career. Ross hauled in a 69-yard, game-winning touchdown against Arkansas last season. Bulldogs fans can only hope that is just a taste of the good things to come in Ross’ third season.

WR Fred Brown (Jr.)
The junior has played in 21 games at WR in the last two seasons, and he’s expected to earn a starting role this fall with the departure of Lewis and Robert Johnson. His biggest performance to date was a three-catch day against Texas A&M in 2014 that netted 69 yards and a touchdown.

RB Ashton Shumpert (Jr.)
The junior, who tops the depth chart at running back, may get the first shot at replacing Robinson. Playing behind him a year ago, Shumpert turned in some nice late-season performances against Vanderbilt and Ole Miss, and also broke a big run against UT-Martin.

RB Dontavian Lee (R-Fr.) and RB Aeris Williams (R-Fr.)
If Shumpert is unable to handle the starting running back job, there are a handful of young, talented backs waiting for their opportunity to show out. Redshirt freshmen Dontavian Lee and Aeris Williams could be the first to get a crack at becoming the next Bulldogs feature back. Lee ran for 53 yards and a touchdown in the Bulldogs spring game.
