Dan Mullen is reportedly going with familiarity with his latest hire, giving assistant coach Brett Elliott another opportunity to coach in Starkville. Elliott is expected to be named Mississippi State’s new quarterbacks coach after two seasons of offensive coordinator work at James Madison and Texas State.

This news was first reported by Football Scoop. Elliott was on Mullen’s MSU staff for three seasons, from 2012-2014, as an offensive quality control coach. After witnessing the progression of Dak Prescott firsthand, State fans can only hope Elliott can tap the same potential out of the promising Nick Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald broke out as a sophomore in 2016, passing for 2,423 yards and 21 touchdowns. The quarterback was arguably even more effective with his legs, rushing for 1,375 yards and 16 touchdowns. His rushing total was second in the SEC, behind only LSU running back Derrius Guice.

Elliott and Mullen also shared time on Utah’s 2003 staff. Ironically enough, Mullen was the quarterbacks coach on that team. Utah went 10-2 and won the Liberty Bowl in 2003. Texas State averaged 18.6 points per game in 2016, which ranked No. 124 in FBS last season.
