Mississippi State has lost one of its initial 2017 verbal commits, as Jackson, Miss., prospect Emanuel Dabney announced his decommitment Friday. Dabney is currently rated as a three-star prospect heading into his senior season of high school football.

Dabney announced news of his decommitment via Twitter:

The 6-foot-1, 170-pound defensive back is rated as a three-star prospect, the No. 13 recruit from the state of Mississippi and the No. 67 cornerback in the nation, according to 247Sports Composite Ratings. Dabney also holds scholarship offers from Ole Miss, Missouri and Cincinnati.

After studying the Bulldogs’ current depth in the defensive backfield, Dabney had second thoughts on his status with the team. Once he began receiving attention from other schools, Dabney decided it was time to back off his commitment to MSU.

“Other schools have been recruiting me harder recently,” Dabney said, according to Will Sammon of The Clarion-Ledger. “I also looked at Mississippi State’s depth chart and they look loaded there. It was very hard to decommit. I didn’t want to decommit because I was one of their first commits and some of my teammates are committed there, too, but I just felt that after talking with my parents and coaches that this was the best decision for me.”

Following Dabney’s decommitment, Mississippi State still has 21 commitments lined up in its 2017 recruiting class.
