Former Mizzou star Aldon Smith burst onto the NFL scene in 2011 as a first-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers. In 2012, the ex-Tiger posted an impressive 19.5 sacks while helping his squad reach the Super Bowl.

However, a string of arrests and substance-abuse problems have derailed his career. After a reported incident over the weekend, Smith’s time as an NFL player could be coming to an end.

According to TMZ, Smith is being investigated by San Francisco police for a domestic incident that occurred on Saturday. Both Smith and the alleged victim were interviewed by police, but it’s important to note that, at this point, no arrests have been made.

The incident is being investigated thoroughly by the police, though, so it’s still possible the Oakland Raider defender could eventually face charges.

If he is charged with a crime, Smith, who is currently suspended by the NFL for his substance-abuse policy violations, could face an extended suspension, which would effectively end his professional career.

Smith was eligible to apply for reinstatement to the league in March, but if he is arrested for Saturday’s incident, that chance probably goes out the window.

In five NFL seasons, Smith has recorded 47.5 sacks, but he missed the entire 2016 season do to the aforementioned suspension.
