We are less than two months away from SEC Media Days madness. Mississippi State has a quarterback battle to talk about. That and the seeming pressure to end Ole Miss’ two-game win streak in the Egg Bowl.

Ole Miss has plenty to talk about, too. Unfortunately for the Rebels, a lot of it revolves around things outside of football.

Here are three players each school should put in front of the Birmingham mics.

MISSISSIPPI STATE

FRED ROSS, SR., WR
The no-brainer choice. Ross is one of only four receivers to go for more than 1,000 yards last season. He’s one of the best receivers in the league and has an interesting path to stay there.

The Bulldogs have a full house of quarterbacking choices with Damian Williams, Elijah Staley, Nick Fitzgerald and Nick Tiano all seemingly battling into the season. Coaches aren’t going to tip us off on who is in the lead. If there is a player who should be asked for input, it’s Ross.

Chances are he won’t say anything juicy or provide any inside information about who he wants under center, but it will be asked.

ASHTON SHUMPERT, SR., RB
Shumpert isn’t a Heisman candidate, and the chances of him even leading the team in rushing this season are slim.

But the in-state senior is one of the best representatives Dan Mullen has ever signed. Shumpert has done everything he has been asked to do and has done it with his team ahead of his stats.

Mississippi’s Gatorade Player of the Year as a running back at Itawamba AHS, the physical Shumpert has been as willing a blocking back as a runner (59 rushes, 228 yards, 1 TD last season).

Shumpert has done his job, and just as importantly, kept his nose clean. He deserves the opportunity.

RICHIE BROWN, SR., LB
The Bulldogs have a young and very talented defense. The old-man leader will be Brown, who last season finished fifth in the SEC with 109 tackles.

That came with 13 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. A half tackle-for-loss is the only thing that kept Brown from leading the team in all three categories, but he decided to stay for his senior season.

He will be able to answer questions about the defense’s potential, his own goals and the ceiling of the young teammates he will be asked to lead.

OLE MISS

CHAD KELLY, SR., QB
Kelly is a Heisman contender and will draw some of the largest crowds at Media Days. At one point in Kelly’s winding journey, that would have been concerning.

Not any longer. He had the stats as his 4,042 passing yards was about 250 more than Dak Prescott’s second-place SEC finish, and he rushed for 500 yards and 10 touchdowns.

He also has earned the microphone off the field turning what was once a questionable signing into unquestionable leadership qualifications.

TONY CONNER, SR., DB
Conner missed eight games in 2015 due to a meniscus injury. That was a letdown after he earned Freshman All-America and All-SEC second team in his first two seasons.

Conner should be expected to explode as a senior auditioning for the NFL. He will be able to talk about a defense that lost several big names but returns several big names, too. None bigger than him.

That would give the Rebels their top offensive player and top defensive player in Birmingham. Plus, Conner was able to watch as much as play last season and had a bird’s eye view of some of the recent drama.

He’ll be coached to answer wisely, but he’ll be asked about it.

EVAN ENGRAM, SR., TE
A second straight invite is in order for Engram, who is projected to go in the first round of the NFL Draft.  He had 38 catches in each of the last two seasons, and like Conner, was part of the heralded 2013 class.

Engram should be asked as much about his personal ability and just how good the Ole Miss offense should continue to be, but there’s no doubt he’ll also be asked about coming in with the class that Laremy Tunsil single-handedly put a cloud around on draft night.

The senior is as cool with the mic as his hands are with the football. He’ll be able to stand the pressure.
