Newsflash: Hugh Freeze is staying in Oxford.

Ole Miss’ head coach was asked about his name being connected to the Florida opening on Monday, and Freeze quickly deflected any notion of a potential move.

Freeze is in the third year of a four-year deal, but Ole Miss director of athletics Ross Bjork told reporters he’s been in talks with Freeze’s agent, Jimmy Sexton, about a new deal, according to Hugh Kellenberger of the Jackson Clarion-Ledger.

“Hopefully when you get to the end it doesn’t as long to get things done,” Bjork said. “That’s where we are. We’ve been proactive throughout the season, coach [Freeze] knows how we feel about him and we love that he loves being here and his family is comfortable. We’ll take the next couple of weeks to iron at the details and by all accounts we’ll have a new deal in place for him when the season’s over.”

Freeze’s name has been linked to the Florida job numerous times in the past 24 hours since it was announced Will Muschamp would not return in 2015. Freeze said he and his family love Oxford, dismissing any notion of a potential move.

According to Kellenberger, Bjork was asked directly whether or not he could foresee the Rebels entering the $5 million club, of which a handful of SEC coaches are a part.

“The new number became [$3 million] last year,” Bjork said. “So we’re at 3. What’s that new number, is that closer to 4? I don’t know if 5 is the number yet. When does it stop, and who is the program that makes that decision to where does it stop? We don’t want to put ourselves in that position.

“I wouldn’t say $5, but it’s creeping up on four for sure. Which is crazy to be saying that, but when you’re in the SEC you got to be able to say, ‘We’re committed to playing and competing at the highest level.’ Whatever that number is where we’re comfortable will be the number.”

Ole Miss’ current athletic budget is $76.5 million, but Kellenberger reports Bjork expects that to creep as high as possibly $90 million in 2015.
