The Maxwell Football Club named Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze a semifinalist for Collegiate Coach of the Year on Wednesday.

In his third season in Oxford, Freeze led the Rebels to a 7-0 start for just the second time in program history. Ole Miss’ current 8-2 mark is the team’s best since 2003.

The Rebels are currently ranked No. 8 in all three major college football polls, regarded as the best two-loss team in the country. Ole Miss boasts wins over No. 1 Alabama. Its two losses came by a combined seven points.

After inheriting a team that went 2-10 and 0-8 in conference play in 2011, Freeze has vaulted the Rebels into relevance nationally. His record at Ole Miss is 23-13. Freeze’s .639 winning percentage is the best of any Ole Miss coach other than John Vaught in the last 100 years.

Freeze is one of 20 candidates for the award. Three finalists will be named by Dec. 8.
