The Ole Miss Rebels aren’t accepting their NCAA sanctions without a fight.

After self-imposing a one-year bowl ban this year, the Rebels were handed an extra year without postseason play by the NCAA earlier this month. They also face scholarship reductions and other penalties.

On Friday, the Rebels filed an appeal of the NCAA sanctions, according to a release from the university. Chancellor Jeffrey Vitter commented on the appeal as well, saying he believes the additional penalties were unfair and unwarranted:

“We have the best legal team in the country to handle our NCAA appeal. We added Mississippi-based firms to further strengthen an already exceptional team so that we are in the best possible position to win this appeal,” stated Chancellor Jeffrey Vitter of the University of Mississippi. “We believe the additional penalties imposed by the COI are unwarranted, which we will make very clear at the appropriate time in our written submissions on the merits of our appeal.”

How long it takes the NCAA to hear the appeal remains to be seen, but it could take some time.

At this point, it seems unlikely that the NCAA committee will back off the additional sanctions, but the Rebels will do what they can.
