D’haquille Williams had a lot going for him as he entered his final season at Auburn in 2015.

At one point, he was considered to be the top wide receiver in the 2016 NFL Draft pool by analyst such as ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr.

But after a nightmare of a fall that included being kicked off the Tigers team for punching a teammate after making just 12 receptions in seven games, some are wondering whether he’s cut out for the NFL at all.

Williams will have his shot at redemption in the eyes of NFL teams as a participant in the NFL Combine, which takes place in Indianapolis this week.

Auburn beat writer Brandon Marcello explored Williams’ NFL possibilities after Kiper weighed in during a teleconference on Monday.

Kiper stated the obvious in that Williams being invited to participate in the somewhat exclusive event is evidence enough that NFL teams could still be interested:

“The fact that he’s there and there are some other good receivers aren’t is the reason why you have to take advantage of it,” Kiper said. “You have to be thankful you’re there, No. 1, because some pretty good receivers aren’t invited that had a much better year than he did — and a much better finish to their career than he did. Be thankful you’re there and maximize. He’s had plenty of time to get ready for it.”

Marcello’s report indicates that Williams may have a camera crew following him around as he prepares to participate in the event, for which he will arrive on Wednesday.

Kiper indicated that the way Williams carries himself in interviews and interactions with team personnel will be critically important for a guy that now carries character questions.

His actions in those situations could matter as much as, if not more than, what he’s able to show during workouts.

When does Kiper think Williams ultimately ends up being drafted, if it all?

“Based on what he showed two years ago, if you look at tapes from those games, you would have thought he could have been a second-round pick,” Kiper said. “If you’re thinking fourth or fifth round now, if you reconcile the other stuff and you’re OK with it, then fourth or fifth round may be very possible.”
