It’ll be a long time before anyone forgets what happened in overtime of the National Championship Game.

With Alabama trailing, the Crimson Tide faced 2nd-and-26, thanks to freshman QB Tua Tagovailoa taking an ill-advised sack. However, on the very next play, he torched the Georgia defense for the game-winning touchdown on a throw to WR DeVonta Smith.

The safety on the play — Dominick Sanders — is at the NFL Combine this week, and said the pass haunted him for a long time (via AL.com):

“Oh man,” he said. “The final play hurt. It was tough. I didn’t get no sleep for about a week. But I had to put that in the past and get my mind on something different, which was this combine.”

So, what exactly happened on the famous play? Sanders said it was just good quarterbacking from Tagovailoa that led to his mistake:

“Yeah, he kind of looked me off,” Sanders said. “I opened up to the middle and try to honor the post that was coming backside. I also had a nine route on my side to the single receiver. I tried to honor the post and by the time he looked back and I opened up, that guy (Smith) was five yards ahead of me. It was pretty much over with.”

Sanders is expected to be a late-round pick in the draft, but it’s safe to say he’ll have to answer some questions about that play when meeting with teams.
