Jalen Mills is one of two players who are expected to miss the start of fall camp, according to Les Miles yesterday at LSU’s media day.

Mills is still indefinitely suspended because of an alleged battery incident in May, but according to the East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore, Mills will be facing a simple battery charge, via NOLA.com.

LSU is expected to begin fall camp Monday, and Moore sent a text with the announcement to media members at 12:15 a.m.

According to the police warrant, Mills punched a female victim in the mouth in May of this year at his Highland Road apartment complex. The victim said she knocked on Mills’ apartment door looking for her friend. Mills opened the door and then closed it again, and she tried knocking once more. After no response, the victim walked away down the hall. She then heard someone say something to her and Mills reportedly punched her when she turned around. The victim fell briefly unconscious on the pavement, and she needed four stitches to close the cut on her lip.

The victim identified Mills in a six-person lineup. A witness also came forward and corroborated the victim’s statement.

A felony warrant was issued, and Mills was arrested on a single count of second-degree battery, but that charge is expected to reduce today to a misdemeanor simple battery charge.

In an incident stemming from a parking lot bar fight last year, former running back Jeremy Hill’s charges were reduced to simple misdemeanor battery, too, and Les Miles allowed Hill back on the team via team vote.

Mills is expected to be a key cog in the Tigers’ very talented secondary. He played mostly corner last season, but he transitioned into a full-time safety role this spring. The rising junior made 67 tackles last season, along with three INTs and six passes defended.
