Four-star cornerback/wide receiver Jalen Christian lives in Maryland and has some family ties to Virginia Tech–but none of that mattered in the end.
Christian announced Thursday afternoon that he will be playing football at South Carolina in 2015. His other finalists were Kentucky, Maryland, Wisconsin and West Virginia. He said he’d prefer to play on offense next year and had 610 receiving yards last fall at Damascus High School in Maryland. He’s 5-foot-10, 165 pounds and runs around a 4.5-second 40-yard dash time and is rated the No. 3 overall prospect in Maryland and the No. 145 overall prospect in America.
South Carolina coaches G.A. Mangus and Steve Spurrier Jr. had both been on his high school campus in May.
The Gamecocks now have nine commitments for the class of 2015, with three of them coming in the past week. Last week they landed their four-star QB in Lorenzo Nunez, while tight end Kyle Markway came aboard earlier this week. In all, the class now has five four-star prospects–and DE Shameik Blackshear is considered a five-star prospect by some individual services.
“That’s great to hear,” Markway told Saturday Down South, when asked about Christian’s commitment. “We keep getting closer to a national championship.”
