Four-star O-lineman names South Carolina in final four

Steven Gonzalez lives in New Jersey, but South Carolina has caught his eye, the high school junior told Saturday Down South.

Gonzalez, rated the No. 164 overall prospect in America for the class of 2015, is a four-star offensive lineman out of Union City (N.J.). He is 6-foot-5, 300 pounds and is rated one of the top 10 junior guards in the nation. Ohio State, Rutgers, Wisconsin and the Gamecocks make up his top four, and the Buckeyes are his leader.

But that doesn’t mean he isn’t seriously still considering the Gamecocks–and there’s still a long way to go.

“I just like coach (G.A.) Mangus and it’s a great program,” Gonzalez told SDS on Monday. “They’ve been sending guys to the league recently. They’re an up-and-coming program in a big conference. Also they’ve proven to be consistent. I feel like if you want some of the best competition, you have to try and play in the SEC. It’s just a powerhouse conference.”

For now, he’ll likely make his final decision closer to national signing day in February 2015.

Editor’s note: Saturday Down South’s references to ratings follow the composite rankings.
