Auburn and Georgia both add ‘sleeper’ commitments

Auburn and Georgia fans, if you thought things would be quiet until the big announcements on Wednesday–think again.

The Tigers and Bulldogs both added sleeper recruits to their classes on Monday. Markell Boston, labeled an ‘athlete’ by, is now on board with the national runner up at Auburn. He is 6-foot-2, 200 pounds and out of East Coweta (Ga.). Shaquille Jones is a 6-foot-2, 175-pound cornerback out of Merritt Island (Fla.), and he has shot up the recruiting charts in January. He has good size for the position and had trekked to Southern Miss, Louisville and then Georgia in successive weekends, after being virtually ignored for months by BCS level schools. He was once committed to South Alabama.

Boston had been committed to East Carolina before flipping to the Tigers. He had taken visits to see the Pirates, Alabama and Nebraska in successive weeks in January, but ended up picking Auburn when the Tigers extended an offer on Monday. Like Jones, he quickly rose as the typical January recruit domino effect took place. He had taken several unofficial visits to Auburn in the fall.

  • Wow. Crazy these guys were committed to places like East Carolina and South Alabama and now they have committed to play for championship contending teams

    • Lot of guys slip through the cracks, ya know? These kids were probably No. 2 or No. 3 on the pecking order, already evaluated. Plus, hey … some kids just have amazing senior seasons and come on late. I covered one in HS like that … Kelin Johnson who ended up being a captain at Georgia. He played QB at a weak school in Florida, then transferred to a power, moved to safety, helped win a state title … and Richt came calling in January. Prior to that? He Kelin was looking like an ECU type kid. January’s huge.
