If Alabama finishes with the nation’s best recruiting class–which it very well could–one can point to this weekend as a big reason for it.
A boatload of current Bama commits will have a chance to work their magic on running back Leonard Fournette–the nation’s No. 1 prospect … period. Bama commits like OL Cameron Robinson, QB David Cornwell, DB Laurence ‘Hootie’ Jones and DT Josh Frazier will be just a few of the players on hand to take in an official visit weekend, and also work on Fournette–who most people believe will pick LSU on Jan. 2 at the Under Armour Game.
This is Alabama’s chance to change that. Also on hand is another prime target–five-star cornerback Jalen Tabor. Since the Crimson Tide have lost two cornerbacks to Auburn over the past few weeks, one would think Tabor becomes a key guy in the recruiting game. He’s clearly going to play second fiddle to Fournette this weekend, but not by much. Alabama’s chief competitor for Tabor is his local school–Maryland. But it is hard to imagine the Terps beating out Bama for any five-star prospect. There are others on their official visits to Alabama, but Fournette and Tabor are the gems of a huge group.
- Elsewhere, Florida will host four-star DE Malik McDowell of Indiana, but he’ll be a tough one to pull away from the Big Ten–namely MIchigan. Making an impression on him would be huge. Also, Kentucky’s biggest remaining target–in-state DT Matthew Elam–will check out the Wildcats’ campus. He’s also looking hard at Alabama, but head coach Mark Stoops has done a great job with this class, and has kept a lot of good talent home. In fact, Stoops is pulling out all the stops and has a ton of current commits coming in for the visit–including QB Drew Barker, the gem of the class so far–undoubtedly to help sway the in-stater. It’s a big weekend for the ‘Cats.
