South Carolina and Tennessee don’t have a whole lot of room left in their classes–the Gamecocks’ group being on the small side and the Vols’ side being rather packed.
But either school would make room for this guy: Cornerback D.J. Smith, a 6-foot-0, 190-pounder out of Marietta (Ga.). This week, he made it known via Twitter that he’ll announce a school choice on Monday, and also eliminated Clemson from contention–only SEC schools South Carolina and Tennessee remain, and indications are that the Gamecocks are the leader.
What’s a bit peculiar about the Monday announcement is that he still plans to visit both schools later in January, so there’s a chance things could change after his announcement–but for now, Jan. 13 is decision day.
The Gamecocks have planned to have a rather small class all along, but this is one pickup the staff would love to get. Tennessee has the nation’s largest class, but more than a dozen of its commitments enrolled early and can be counted a bit differently than the normal signee–so the Vols can make it happen if they want.
Stay tuned. D.J. Smith is next … he’s on the clock.
