Darrius Caldwell is a familiar face at South Carolina.

Coming out of high school, Caldwell caught the eye of the Gamecocks’ coaching staff. After a stint at Pearl River Community College, Caldwell came aboard with South Carolina. He is a 6-foot-6, 240-pound weakside defensive end, rated No. 1 in the national for junior colleges. He is a four-star prospect who was originally committed to Illinois.

“South Carolina actually offered me out of high school,” Caldwell told Saturday Down South on Wednesday, hours after committing. “There was a lot to sell about the program because it speaks for itself. Playing ball for South Carolina is a great second chance for me. The things my coach pointed out about my game are my versatility and obviously the fact that I’ve already played college ball.”

Caldwell played his high school football at Mays H.S. in Atlanta (Ga.).
