Ole Miss adds four-star running back Swinney to the class

Eric Swinney made Ole Miss fans happy on Friday, while Tennessee and Auburn fans might be a bit bummed right about now.

The four-star running back made it official Friday morning when he Tweeted this: “I am officially committed to the University of Mississippi #RebelNation #HottyToddy #Family.” Swinney had been on Ole Miss’ campus for two unofficial visits in the past month and a half, helping drive home the point that the Rebels were his leader.

He is rated the No. 98 overall prospect in the country, the No. 12 running back in the nation and Georgia’s No. 12 top overall prospect–not a bad resume. As a junior he rushed for 1,149 yards and 22 touchdowns for Sandy Creek HS. He also is a good receiver out of the backfield, catching just 11 passes but going 325 yards for 4 TDs.

He is from Tyrone (Ga.), and in March did list Georgia as one of his favorites, but there is quite the logjam at his position and his activities this spring indicated it likely would come down to the three SEC schools up above and not the Bulldogs. Georgia is stacked at running back with talented backs Nick Chubb and Sony Michel signing earlier this year.

Ole Miss now has its fifth commitment for the 2015 class, and its first pickup in nearly two months. As a Top 100 national prospect, Swinney immediately becomes Ole Miss’ top recruit, ahead of the nation’s No. 270 prospect, Ole Miss commit Willie Hibbler.

  • Great pick up for Ole Miss. This year’s recruiting class for Ole Miss will be a smaller class (17-20 recruits), so Ole Miss is taking it’s time and making sure they get the recruits they need. They are in the mix for a ton of top recruits, so Ole Miss fans aren’t worried that they haven’t picked up many recruits yet.
