The next few weeks are going to be pivotal in terms of who SEC programs are going to get at the QB position. While five-star prospect Torrance Gibson is at the top of several programs’ QB want lists, only three SEC programs have a realistic chance with him–Auburn, LSU and Tennessee. And really? It’s more like Auburn and Tennessee.
Gibson is going to make everybody wait, at least that’s what he’s saying now. That could create some headaches for coaching staffs that would like to know what they are getting. Staffs would also love to have their future QB recruiting for them.
As of now, Alabama has probably the most perplexing QB situation. Last year, the Crimson Tide were in fantastic position with their 2015 QB, as Ricky Town was on board. Now, the five-star Town is with his home state school, Southern Cal. And that created a gaping hole in the ‘Tide’s class. Right now, it appears their top target is 6-foot-7 New Mexico native Zach Gentry. They’ve also taken a look at David Sills, who committed to Southern Cal when current Bama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin was the head coach. Now, the Trojans don’t need Sills and he’s sort of floating around out there, looking for a home.
At any rate, commitments should be coming for many schools. In the near future, keep a close eye on Lorenzo Nunez (South Carolina), Kyler Murray (Texas A&M) and maybe even Dwayne Lawson (Florida). If those three jump on their respective offers soon, it’ll loosen up the logjam and things will start popping. Nationally, keep an eye on Travis Waller (Pac 12 type kid) and Kai Locksley (lots of options)–though they may not end up in the SEC, their upcoming decisions will also loosen things up and it’ll have an effect on the SEC.
Here’s a look at each team and where they stand. Note that some programs really won’t have a clear picture of their top realistic targets until commitments start flowing, nationally.
|PRIME QB TARGET||SECONDARY||THE SKINNY|
|Alabama||David Sills||???||Zack Gentry is off the board now to Texas. This could get interesting. Who is next?|
|Arkansas||Ty Storey||none||Storey is the best player in Arkansas, and he is solidly on board for Razorbacks|
|Auburn||Torrance Gibson||Kai Locksley||Also, QB Tyler Queen is already committed to the Tigers—but Tigers may take 2|
|Florida||Deondre Francois||????||Dwayne Lawson is off the board now, surprisingly, heading to Miami. Francois becomes a big one now.|
|Georgia||????||????||This isn’t a massively critical year for quarterbacks for the Bulldogs|
|Kentucky||Reese Ryan?||????||Don’t be surprised if Wildcats go for another program’s QB commitment now|
|LSU||Torrance Gibson||Jason Pellerin||LSU won’t get Gibson, so will they offer in-state sleeper Pellerin?|
|Ole Miss||Tucker Israel?||????||With heavy target Kelly Bryant picking Clemson, things changing for Rebels|
|Mississippi St.||Chason Virgil||none||A lot of guys were in the mix for this slot, but things changed last night with Virgil’s commitment.|
|Missouri||Drew Lock||none||Lock committed to the Tigers last week, and they’re all set now|
|South Carolina||Lorenzo Nunez||none||Nunez is now on board. Gamecocks did a nice job with him.|
|Tennessee||Torrance Gibson||Eric Dungey?||Vols have a good shot at landing Gibson, the nation’s top remaining QB|
|Texas A&M||Kyler Murray||None||Murray is an Aggies legacy, and there’s little doubt he’ll end up in Coll. Station|
|Vandy||Joe Burrow?||Eric Dungey?||Still developing, but remember Oregon native Eric Dungey, who just visited|
