Semper Fi Game features 19 SEC commits, great crop of Aggies

Today’s Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl has 19 current SEC commits, several other top targets–and 9 of the SEC’s 14 schools are represented. Want to see future Heisman winners and all-SEC performers? Here’s how you can tune in.

  • WHAT: Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl
  • WHEN: Sunday, Jan. 5—9 p.m. EST
  • WHERE: Carson, Calif.
  • LIVE TV: Fox Sports 1
  • PAST NOTABLES: Todd Gurley, Antonio Morrison, Marshall Morgan, Ryan Switzer (only in its third year).
  • SEC COMMITS AT GAME: 19 so far, with a few other possibilities.
  • TOP SEC COMMITS/TARGETS (with nat. rank.): No. 109 Dewayne Hendrix (DE, Tennessee commit); No. 149 Qualen Cunningham (DE, Texas A&M); No. 152 Keyon Brown (LB, Georgia); 159 DeShawn Washington (DT, Texas A&M); No. 187 Varshaun Nixon (RB, Texas A&M); No. 193 Duke Dawson (DB, Florida).
  • ANOTHER TOP AGGIES SHOWING?: Texas A&M clearly has the best group of any SEC school, with all three of its prospects (Qualen Cunningham, Varshaun Nixon, DeShawn Washington) being four-star players—and only Tennessee and Vandy have three players in this game. The Aggies have had a good all-star game week, picking up two outstanding receiver commitments while also having great individual showings in both the Under Armour Game and the Army Game.
  • QUARTERBACKS: The lone signal caller heading to an SEC schools is K.J. Carta-Samuels, who is heading to Vanderbilt to follow in the footsteps of his brother, Austyn, who plays for head coach James Franklin. Carta-Samuels is a four-star prospect who has been on board with the Commodores for more than a year.
  • TOP PLAYER TO WATCH: We’ll go with talkative, friendly DB Duke Dawson who is heading to Florida to play for the Gators. He’s an upbeat teammate, and would naturally mesh well into a game like this where quick chemistry is the key. Look for Dawson to make a big play or two in a game that usually doesn’t feature a whole lot of offense. RB Derrell Scott is a huge SEC target, with South Carolina, Florida and Tennessee among those interested, but unfortunately he won’t play because of a knee injury. He might have been the guy to watch, otherwise.
  • THE SKINNY: Sadly, this appears to be the last Semper Fi Game, as military budget cutbacks have hit this game hard. Unless another title sponsor comes aboard, this might be it for a game that actually did a great job of finding a major league level stadium and a national TV contract, along with a major sponsor. It attracted decent talent, too. Of the SEC commits coming in, 10 are four-star prospects or better.

NOTE: All recruiting rankings mentioned refer to the composite rankings.
