Many SEC schools now done recruiting QBs, but several are on the clock

Things are tightening up in the race to land … the primary quarterback target.

Five-star QB Kyler Murray decided to stay close to home and play for dad’s alma mater at Texas A&M, a Wednesday announcement which had repercussions nationally, especially at Oregon–which immediately after the news turned around and offered a scholarship to its second target, rising four-star stud Travis Waller, who also has some SEC schools’ attention. Waller will now weigh being “second fiddle” at Oregon against being the second QB pickup for Ohio State, which took the first of two planned quarterback commitments earlier this week when Joe Burrow came aboard. Of course, that also means Urban Meyer may be moving on from the Torrance Gibson marathon …

Clear as mud? Cross-eyed yet? Clear as a teenagers’ gossipy chatter during a sleepover? Well, that’s how it goes with quarterback recruiting. It’s a he-said, she-said sort of operation.

“When you choose your college it’s like picking your wife and making sure she is the right one,” Waller told Saturday Down South in the past week.

So how do things stand as of May 29th? Below is a chart giving you a rough idea. It looks more and more like Alabama and Georgia may not even take a quarterback in this cycle. LSU might be interesting to watch too, because the Tigers are on the outside looking in with the Gibson situation, and they don’t have a monster backup plan. They don’t have to take a kid this year.

The ones to keep an eye on now are Florida, Auburn and Tennessee. Auburn already has Tyler Queen on board but may add another QB. Florida is definitely in the market for another dual-threat kid and certainly will take one, and Tennessee wants–and apparently leads–for Gibson. And Vandy, Kentucky and Ole Miss may be willing to wait a tad bit longer, but they’d like to have a stud QB on board soon too.

Alabama David Sills?? ??? Tide may opt to wait until 2016 for a QB, this class didn’t work out
Arkansas Ty Storey none Storey is solidly on board for Razorbacks and recruiting for them
Auburn Torrance Gibson Kai Locksley Also, QB Tyler Queen is committed the Tigers—but Tigers may take 2
Florida Sheriron Jones Deondre Francois Dwayne Lawson is off the board now, heading to Miami. Jones is next.
Georgia ???? ???? This isn’t a massively critical year for quarterbacks for the Bulldogs
Kentucky Reese Ryan? ???? Don’t be surprised if Wildcats go for another program’s QB commit
LSU Torrance Gibson Jason Pellerin? LSU won’t get Gibson, so will it even take a QB this year?
Ole Miss Ross Trail? ???? Lots of dynamics in Rebels QB situation, could Trail be next guy?
Mississippi St. Chason Virgil none A lot of guys were in the mix for this slot, but Virgil ended it
Missouri Drew Lock none Lock committed to the Tigers in the past month, they’re all set now
South Carolina Lorenzo Nunez none Nunez is now on board. Gamecocks did a nice job with him.
Tennessee Torrance Gibson Eric Dungey? Vols have best shot at landing Gibson, but will have to wait
Texas A&M Kyler Murray None Aggies’ legacy is now on board, Oregon will have to look elsewhere
Vandy Quinten Dormedy Kyle Shurmur Call these two “tied” for No. 1 at the top of the board

  • Say what you will about Mizzou but we’ll always have a good QB. Mauk, Prince, Lock, we’re good-to-go… Not to mention Skylar Thompson, heis a Jr one year behind Lock that we’re interested in too. Remember that name around this time next spring..

    • right on Bg, I hate it that Hosick didn’t stay and play line backer however, or safety, or corner, and special teams. Such a talented athlete.

      • Wolf & Bg……..where did Hosick land? …….also, if Lock is as good as advertised, will Prince bolt also?

        • Hosick is headed to juco in Oklahoma for a year, then BYU after that. Not sure what Printz will do if Lock is all that…

        • Mikzou …. hate to hear that about Printz but you’re probably right. Got to know Eddie and his dad Ed a bit during the recruiting process. First of all, it’s a Marine family, so that’s something we connected on a bit …. but most of all, a great kid and a great dad. UCLA screwed him over royally and then he had to hunt for a “next” situation and he went with Mizzou knowing that Mauk was going to be there (and who knew about Lock later). Pretty tough deal. The QB shuffle is brutal. Some really good guys never really see daylight because of circumstance.

  • yeah Brian but Printz could be the number one back up to Mauk. and you never know who would play every day if Mauk gets injured. also I think Zanders will get a shot before Lock. I’m already liking this kid.
