South Carolina may land its future starting quarterback tonight

South Carolina coaches and fans loved Connor Shaw, and for good reason. As head ball coach Steve Spurrier put it, Shaw was the most productive quarterback in South Carolina history.

Tonight at 6:30 p.m., the Gamecocks may land another gem with the same kinds of tools as Shaw. Lorenzo Nunez–a four-star Georgia QB product with excellent mobility and a good frame to boot (6-3/190)–will choose between the Gamecocks, Ohio State and N.C. State. It appears this is a near lock for South Carolina.

The Gamecocks took a quarterback last year, unheralded Michael Scarneccia out of Florida, but it seemed to be more a move for depth. There’s no question Nunez is a guy who will contend for the starting job quickly.

Nunez is considered the No. 199 player in the nation by the 247Sports.com composite ranking. He is rated the No. 8 dual-threat quarterback in the country, too.

  • In the last paragraph, did you mean the 199th ranked overall recruit instead of 199th ranked QB?

    • Indeed, overall player.

      • Nunez would be an awesome pickup. We were targeting Nunez and Wimbush at the QB position, Wimbush committed to Penn State the other day. Interesting to see that we continue to go after dual-threat QBs and not the typical Spurrier of the past pocket style passer, and to see if the offense changes from more of a spread (Shaw) to more of a pro-style (Thompson & Mitch) and then back to a spread with Nunez in charge.

        • Geez, did I say 199th ranked QB? Nice catch Gamecock.

It’s true, this is a HUGE pickup, Gamecock. Kid can play.

  • Am I wrong or did you say 19th player 8th duel threat QB. That was all phrased correctly? Right? I didn’t see an error unless it was corrected prior to my login?
What’s up with the big kid from PA. ? Nosivitch?

  • Am I wrong or did you say 190th player 8th duel threat QB. That was all phrased correctly? Right? I didn’t see an error unless it was corrected prior to my login?

  • Nunez has had a tough high school career with 3 coaches/systems in three years! I feel he will have a big ime breakout year with the same coach/system for the 1st time in his H.S. career!
