Top QB prospects from the state of Alabama since 2008

Will AJ McCarron win the starting quarterback job for Alabama?

It’s fun to look back and see which prognostications were correct and which were way off. When it comes to the state of Alabama, the recruiting rankings haven’t been far off when rating quarterbacks the last few years.

Obviously, Jameis Winston has already lived up to his five-star prep status and he’s eligible to play for a few more years. And A.J. McCarron also fulfilled his lofty ranking coming out of St. Paul’s Episcopal in Mobile (Ala.) in 2009.

The jury is still out on a couple others.

Guys like Jonathan Wallace, Jeremy Johnson, Jacob Coker, Stephen Rivers and Jalen Whitlow all have a chance to finish their careers on a high note, but are works in progress. Coker, Rivers and Whitlow all transferred this year, while Wallace–a part-time starter in 2012–and uber-talented Johnson are fighting for playing time this year and the starting job next year at Auburn after senior Nick Marshall finishes.

Here’s a look at the top 10 quarterback recruits that came from the state of Alabama since 2008. And one has to wonder … if Alabama’s QB situation in 2012 had been like it is right now (i.e. — a bit up in the air and ‘open’ for 2014) would Jameis Winston have stayed in his home state and played for the Crimson Tide, maybe?

  • Jameis Winston said he definitely wanted to and would be playing right now for Texas for dual sports, academics (podiatry), and the 4.0 GPA HS grad never could get Mack Brown’s attention. Another blunder on UT Brown’s part. He also liked Miami and ultimately Jimbo and the baseball coach, as well as academics sold him. He never considered Alabama, maybe because as Joe Namath said in January, Alabama will not play a black quarterback period.
