National Signing Day could change drastically going forward if conference commissioners vote to add an early signing period in December.

But if Wednesday was the last of its kind, it gave us plenty of drama and entertainment.

Alabama, Tennessee, LSU, Auburn and Florida won headlines within the SEC on NSD, but what about the rest of the country? What stood out?

HUGE DAY FOR LOS ANGELES

The USC/UCLA rivalry returned to being one of the most intriguing in the country the last two years, with the emergence of the Bruins as a Pac-12 contender under Jim Mora and the Trojans’ starters retaining elite talent.

That rivalry blossomed on Signing Day. The Trojans challenged Alabama for the No. 1 class in 2015, while the Bruins dominated the ESPNU broadcast, earning more Wednesday decisions than any other school.

Though Alabama earned a fifth consecutive mythical recruiting national championship according to the consensus, Scout.com ranked USC’s class No. 1 ahead of the Crimson Tide. Most expected five-star CB Iman Marshall to sign with the Trojans on Wednesday, but the program also won out with five-star DT Rasheem Green and four-star OLB John Houston.

USC’s lack of depth in recent seasons has made the Trojans more like fool’s gold, but now that NCAA sanctions are behind them and with such a touted recruiting class, that’s no longer an issue.

Meanwhile, the Bruins got Wednesday signatures from undecideds in TE Chris Clark (the consensus No. 85 player nationally), RB Soso Jamabo (No. 32), G Josh Wariboko (No. 103) and WR Cordell Broadus (No. 222). LB Roquan Smith (No. 47) chose the Bruins ahead of Georgia on TV, but since has reopened his recruitment and has yet to sign a letter of intent.

Still, both the Trojans and Bruins signed consensus Top 10 classes and should each have a great opportunity to win the Pac-12 in 2015. Speaking of UCLA…

ASIAN GIRLS EVERYWHERE

Five-star RB Soso Jamabo of Plano, Texas, signed with UCLA on Wednesday, along with a ton of other big-time uncommitted recruits.

Jamabo, though, may be the most quotable player in the class, if his Twitter announcement is any indication. (Yes, we know, he quoted lyrics from Childish Gambino’s “You See Me,” which doesn’t make it any less funny.)

It appeared to be a tough decision for Jamabo, who chose between two UCLA hats.

Asian Girls Everywhere, of course, was trending nationally on Twitter.

PENN STATE COACH JAMES FRANKLIN MAKES FACETIME MISHAP

Penn State coach James Franklin wanted to give three-star DE Shareef Miller a congratulatory call Wednesday after the high school senior signed his letter of intent with the Nittany Lions.

So Franklin, always social media savvy, took to the FaceTime app to place a call. Only he dialed the wrong number.

Aleem Medley, a lifelong Penn State fan on his way to work in Philadelphia, saw his iPhone light up. The screen read “Penn State Athletics.” So Medley answered the phone, and there was Franklin, the coach of his favorite football team, surrounded by balloons and dressed up in signing day attire.

“I guess we were off a digit,” Franklin said, according to ESPN.com. “This guy comes on the screen and we’re trying to call Shareef Miller and I’m thinking, ‘This must be Shareef’s older brother or someone I haven’t met yet,’ and the guy’s got a huge smile on his face. He goes, ‘Coach Franklin!’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah! What’s going on? Congratulations!’

“He’s looking at me like I’m crazy. He goes, ‘Coach, I think you’ve got the wrong number, but this is awesome! It’s national signing day! Thanks for calling!'”

JIM HARBAUGH’S FIRST CLASS AT MICHIGAN ISN’T ALL THAT

Michigan’s 2015 class ranked No. 38 nationally according to the 247Sports Composite, with 14 total signees and six four-star players.

That’s a significant improvement from when Harbaugh accepted the job, but even given his (very) limited recruiting window, Harbaugh’s first Wolverines class has to be viewed as somewhat of a disappointment.

The sexiest hire in college football in many years, Harbaugh secured two well-regarded pro-style quarterbacks, four-star receiver Brian Cole (already on campus) and four-star TE Tyrone Wheatley Jr.

A tight end maven at Stanford, Harbaugh still lost Chris Clark, a more sought-after player at the position, to UCLA. Ohio State and Urban Meyer held on to RB Mike Weber despite a strong push from the Wolverines, and the team missed on a few other top targets.

Michigan will improve right away and should compete for Big Ten and national championships within a few years. But those that expect instant magic from Harbaugh, like he provided when he took the job with the San Francisco 49ers, are in for a major disappointment.
