Chauncey Rivers won’t play for Georgia in its upcoming bowl game, according to Dawgs247’s Jake Rowe.

The freshman defensive end has been suspended for the Taxslayer Bowl matchup against Penn State after being arrested for misdemeanor possession of marijuana last Saturday, his second arrest in two months.

“Chauncey won’t play in the bowl game,” UGA interim coach Bryan McClendon said, according to Rowe. “He’s gonna be suspended for the bowl game. Right now that’s the only really update I can give you.”

Rivers was arrested by Athens-Clarke County police at 1:12 a.m. on Saturday morning for possession of one ounce or less of marijuana. According to Dawgs247, he was the passenger in a car with other UGA players, including freshman linebacker Natrez Patrick, who was the driver, and freshman defensive back Rico McGraw, who sat in the back seat.

Rivers was already suspended earlier this season for a separate incident involving marijuana, missing the Kentucky game in Week 10. At that time, he was arrested for possession of marijuana, also a misdemeanor charge, after admitting to smoking in a campus parking lot with teammate Natrez Patrick on Nov. 7. Patrick was also suspended for the game against the Wildcats.

According to the UGA student-athlete handbook, Rivers is subjected to a suspension of “no less than 30 percent of the total sport season.” He will also have to complete 40 hours of community service and “will attend substance abuse counseling and evaluation sessions.”

The 6-foot-3, 272-pound Rivers has played in four games this season and has registered 4 tackles with a tackle for loss.
